Chapel Market

Located just off the southern end of Liverpool Road, Chapel Market has sold its wares since it became a fully-fledged, bustling market in the 1860s – much to the annoyance of the area's well-heeled residents in their nearby, newly-built townhouses...

Today the market continues to thrive, but local residents are much more supportive, with many relishing the fresh produce, flowers, clothing and handy household goods on offer from the market's 160 pitches. Open Tuesday-Sunday, the market is unpretentious and good value, with a handful of tasty little street food vendors and some very impressive produce on offer, particularly on Sundays when additional sellers lend a farmer's market feel to this Islington staple.

ABOUT THE MARKET

With a history dating back almost 150 years, Chapel Market is now an Islington institution. Unlike many of London’s historic markets, this destination hasn’t been colonised by expensive, boutique sellers. Instead it continues to sell a wide variety of good quality, affordable produce, mixed with a choice handful of tasty street food options and some extra delectable treats on Sunday from sellers attending the weekly farmer’s market.

Cake & Whisky blogger Sandra Guerin is a particular fan of Chapel Market: "I love the local farmer’s market taking over the street on Sundays. There's a bit of everything, from organic and locally-produced fruit and veggies to meat, poultry, eggs, beautiful flowers and enough cakes to satisfy the sweeter-toothed ones amongst us!". Sandra is a regular market attendee and has some great inside tips for new visitors: "I have many favourites down there, but one stall I always visit is Harvest Moon, which offers the best quality free range eggs at incredible prices. There's also a great little falafel stand that hits the spot every time!".

For visitors hungry for something a little meatier, Smokin’ Aces is a market "must-visit", selling an array of melt-in-the-mouth slow-cooked BBQ goodness, including 15-hour slow-smoked pork shoulder. Also located on the street is the Little Viet Kitchen , with a restaurant and a stall to tempt market-goers with coconut pork banh mi, stuffed with herbs, pate, pickles, 6-hour coconut water braised belly pork lemongrass, chilli, garlic and "all sorts of goodness", all inspired by the cuisine of the Mekong Delta.
