Partridges Food Market began in 2005, when the owners of the family-run food shop Partridges decided they’d like to make more use of the space outside their shop. This space, also known as the Duke of York Square, now plays host to 70 stallholders every Saturday from 10am to 4pm.
The aim of Partridges Food Market is to celebrate fine, local, British and international foods by giving some of the smallest traders the chance to share their delicious produce with the public. This includes startup businesses that make 50 percent or more of their turnover from markets.
The sheer variety of the hot, cold and artisanal foods on offer, and the market’s prime location just off Sloane Square, makes it the perfect spot for a bite to eat while enjoying a Saturday out shopping. Those with a sweet tooth might also like to make a note of the two chocolate festivals held at the market every year.
about the market
While there are some 70 stallholders on any given Saturday, Partridges Food Market plays host to around 150 speciality food producers who regularly call the area home. They sell everything from cheese, fresh shellfish, cakes, rustic pâtés and plenty more.
Chango Empanadas is one of the regular stalls you’re likely to find in the bustling square. If you’re struggling to locate this authentic Argentinean treat, simply follow your nose or join the back of the longest queue – chances are it’ll lead you to Bernardo Neville’s stall. The signature dish is the Argentine empanadas - delicious handmade pastries with a variety of fillings.
If you’re looking for another South American treat, Panka, the creation of Peruvian couple Julio Brujis and Taryn Takahashi, could be right up your street. The couple created their business Panka to deliver tasty, genuine and challenging Peruvian dishes to the people of London.
The couple felt their cuisine was underrepresented in the UK, so they now spend their Saturdays serving their grilled chilli chicken signature dish. They were even kind enough to pass on the recipe: "It’s freshly grilled chicken breast meat marinated in sun dried panka chilli paste, garlic and spices, served with a choice of vegan quinua, new potatoes, mixed rice, salads, and selection of sauces including our own home made chilli sauce."
